The State of São Paulo recorded an increase in intentional homicides, rapes, robberies and thefts in the last month of September compared to the same period in 2021, according to data released by the Secretary of Public Security (SSP) this Tuesday, 25. The biggest increase occurred in cases of intentional homicide, with a total of 253 in the month against 226 last year, an increase of 11.95%. When taking into account the number of victims (each case may have more than one victim) the records went from 243 to 270, a variation of 11.11%. The occurrences of theft throughout September this year totaled 46,385 cases, an increase of 8.55% compared to the same period last year. The number is equivalent to 1,546 thefts per day last month in the cities of São Paulo. When looking specifically at vehicle theft, however, this increase is greater. There were 8,500 in September, 22.1% more than in the same month of the previous year, when there were 6,900 occurrences. Robbery cases went from 19,366 to 20,527, up 6%. Rape went from 1,076 to 1,153 – 7.16% more compared to September 2021. In view of the increase observed since the first half of the year, the government of São Paulo launched Operation Sufoco with the aim of intensifying policing on the streets, but the records kept going up.

22/10/2022 – An 81-year-old woman was strangled to death during a robbery at her home, on Rua Aracanga, in Sacomã, South Zone. According to information from the Military Police, the criminals jumped the wall of the residence and entered the house through the window of one of the victims’ bedrooms. The criminals were aggressive and demanded money and jewelry from the family. The old woman started screaming for help and calling the police, when one of the criminals started to strangle her. Her daughter was also attacked.
22/10/2022 – A businessman was released from captivity on the Nova Esperança lane, in Parque Taipas, North Zone after being kidnapped for about 17 hours. To the military police, the victim said that around 23:00 on Saturday (22) he was standing at a traffic light on an avenue when five armed men approached him and ordered him to get into the back seat of their car. Subsequently, the businessman was taken into captivity, where the kidnappers tried to make bank transfers, but since the man did not have an account in Brazil, criminals could not do Pix, thus they were unable to make the transactions.
23/10/2022 – A motorcyclist reacted to an attempted robbery by taking the suspect’s gun and shooting him, on Rua Barão do Tibagi, in Bom Retiro, downtown São Paulo. He was leaving his house when two men on a motorcycle approached and announced the robbery. The duo’s intention was to steal the victim’s motorcycle.
23/10/2022 – A young man was shot dead after an argument in a cafeteria in Itaim Paulista, East Zone. The victim was at there with four other friends. A police officer started an argument with the group alleging that the youths were looking at his girlfriend. During the fight, one of those involved managed to grab the police officer’s gun. At that moment, the woman pulled out another gun and gave it to him. The officer then knocked the victim down, kicked him and then shot the young man.
24/10/2022 – The Civil Police carried out a large-scale operation in Cracolândia, São Paulo central region. The police closed all exits and searched suspects for drugs and also investigated other crimes and misdemeanors, as well as possible fugitives hiding in the region.
25/10/2022 –A motorcyclist was robbed in Brooklyn, South Zone. Security camera footage shows five criminals on three motorcycles. They approach the motorcyclist, who is surrounded. He is searched by them and hands over his backpack, helmet and all personal effects. Then he runs off in desperation and the thieves leave with the stolen motorcycle.
26/10/2022 – A teacher returning home was kidnapped in the Cidade Kemel neighborhood, Itaim Paulista region, East Zone. The victim had just gotten into her car after work and was on her way home when she decided to video call her husband. Before the call could be completed, the woman was approached by four armed men who surrendered her and announced the kidnapping. The call, which was in progress, was made, and the victim’s partner realized what was happening. He disconnected the call, and called the vehicle’s insurance, which immediately proceeded to track the car. The man called the Military Police and indicated the location of his wife. Police officers managed to approach the group and free the victim. The victim stated that after the kidnapping began, she was under the group’s watch, which circulated through the streets of the region for about 15 minutes demanding money and bank passwords. A man and a woman were arrested.
27/10/2022 – Three criminals held a guard hostage in a construction container in the Itaim Paulista region, East Zone. According to the Military Police, three criminals, at least one of them armed, surrendered a security guard at a construction site with containers and a backhoe. The victim was trapped inside one of the containers being watched by a criminal, while the other two stole equipment from the construction site and the backhoe. Neighbors noticed the strange movement and called the Military Police. When the vehicles arrived, two of the suspects managed to escape, but one of them was arrested.
27/10/2022 – The police is investigating who are the arsonists in the East Zone of São Paulo. Cameras caught the criminal action in the Itaquera region. There are two men on a motorcycle, the passenger gets off and goes towards parked cars. He spills a flammable liquid and sets it on fire. Then he goes to another car and does the same thing. In another image, a third car is also set on fire, in the same region.
28/10/2022 – A man held his son hostage inside the house where he lives with his family, in Interlagos, South Zone, after having assaulted and stabbed his wife. Gate teams (Special Tactics Action Group) went to the scene to try to negotiate with the criminal. According to information, the couple had argued, at which time the suspect attacked the woman in front of the child. Witnesses called the police. After the woman was rescued, the man, afraid of being taken by the police, held his son hostage.
