SÃO PAULO SECURITY INCIDENTS – 3RD BULLETIN OF MAY

Data from a survey carried out by the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP) in partnership with Unicef released on Tuesday (16) show that between 2020 and 2022, 62 battalions of the Military Police of the State of São Paulo incorporated portable operational cameras (COP) during the service routine. The difference in pre-COP and post-COP numbers is stark. In 2017, there were 171 deaths caused by interventions by military police (MDIP) on duty for young people between 15 and 19 years old. In 2021, the year following the implementation of the cameras, there were 42 deaths (-75%). In 2022, 34 deaths were recorded, the lowest number in the historical series (-80.1%, compared to 2017). In the battalions that incorporated the use of body cameras, there was a 76.2% reduction in the lethality of military police officers on duty between 2019 and 2022, while in the other battalions the decrease was 33.3%. The study found that the implementation of cameras on uniforms also reduced the number of police deaths on duty and off duty. In 2020, for example, 18 MPs were murdered while working; in 2021, there were four (-77%); already in 2022, six deaths (- 66%).
