25/06/2022 – A couple of residents was robbed when trying to enter the condominium in Vila Mascote, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. Two armed criminals approached the couple in the early morning and took all their belongings before they managed to get in.
Our analysis:
When going back home, it is important to avoid taking too long to enter your house. Indeed, outside, you are more easily at the mercy of criminals, who might take advantage of your distraction when trying to find your keys for instance, or discussing with a neighbor, to attack you. Try to have your key ready in your hands to enter home quickly, and only when inside, take your time to discuss or look at your phone.
27/06/2022 – Criminals surrounded a family and stole their car in broad daylight in the Jabaquara region, in the Central Zone of Sao Paulo. The mother managed to remove her daughter who was inside, in the back seat.

27/06/2022 – A man was shot dead in his luxury car in Jadrim Apuana, in Tremembé, in the North Zone of Sao Paulo, around 15h. The victim was hit by at least 6 shots. Police believes this was an execution rather than a robbery attempt.
28/06/2022 – Two women were surrendered and kidnapped on a dead-end street by two criminals in the Interlagos region, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. Police officers arrested later a member of the PIX gang that operated in the same region.
02/07/2022 – A man was shot in the chest in his luxury car, parked in a vehicle inspection store, on Av. Sumaré, in Perdizes, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo, when he was approached by criminals.
Our analysis:
Avoiding staying in your car once it is parked is an important thing to do. Indeed, it is better to leave it and go into a store, if you need to check at your phone for instance, than to stay inside. Inside the car, you become an easier target for criminals who are always keeping an eye on the street activity.
02/07/2022 – Two men were arrested after stealing the cell phones of a group of friends who were in front of a pizzeria in Barra Funda, in the West Zone of São Paulo. Witnesses declared the victims were ordering a pizza and got distracted while drinking. The bandits took advantage of it to steal the cell phones. One of the criminals managed to flee.
04/07/2022 – A woman avoided a robbery attempt when parking her luxury car in her garage in Vila Anglo Brasileira, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo. Criminals were waiting for her to park when they rushed to her car, but the woman did not leave her vehicle and left the garage. The criminals went back to their car and fled the scene.
06/07/2022 – A woman had her house invaded by dozens of people who wanted to rescue a balloon in Itaquera, in the East Zone of Sao Paulo. The resident was sleeping with her five daughters when several people invaded the house. The people broke tiles, the house gate, and a security camera.
08/07/2022 – A couple was violently help up and robbed on the sidewalk by criminals pretending to be deliverymen on motorcycles, in Brooklin neighborhood, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo.
08/07/2022 – Two suspects on bicycles stole a motorcycle estimated at R$ 50,000 in the afternoon, in Av. Brigadeiro Faria Lima, in Itaim Bibi, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo. Nobody has been arrested up to now.
13/07/2022 – A man was kidnapped in the parking lot of a restaurant in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. The victim was forced to complete PIX transactions superior to R$ 100,000 to the gang. He also had his luxury car, cell phone, computer and even his wedding ring stolen.
14/07/2022 – A couple was robbed by fake delivery men while getting in a car in Pinheiros, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo.
Our analysis:
Assaults on pedestrians, invasion of businesses and condominiums have been constant since a few weeks in the region of Pinheiros. To avoid being victim of the criminals on the loose, it is important to make sure to take every security measure possible: lock your house before leaving, avoid walking on the street with phones in hands, avoid showing any sign of wealth.
14/07/2022 – A gang of criminals robbed a bank in the afternoon at Av. Morumbi, in the neighborhood of the same name, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. According to the police, at least 6 criminals robbed a branch, taking about two suitcases with money and a gun, which would belong to one of the security guards.
16/07/2022 – The police freed two victims from captivity in Brasilândia, in the North Zone of Sao Paulo. They had been kidnapped by a group of criminals who used date apps to find their victims and force them to make PIX transfers. The police agents seized a fake gun and a revolver. In total, three men and a woman were arrested, and a fifth suspect is still on the run.
18/07/2022 – A criminal, in a restaurant, observed people eating at a table and managed to rob R$ 50, official documents and a credit card by putting his hands into a woman’s purse while she was talking to her friends. The incident took place in Jardim Miriam, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. The criminal managed to flee. The action was recorded by security cameras, but the bandit has not been identified yet.
Our analysis:
When one sits at a table to have dinner, his attention on what is going on around tends to decrease. Nevertheless, it is important to never let the guard down or have belongings completely exposed. Indeed, just like in the news aforementioned, criminals can pretend to be customers of a place and then observe the situation and spot easy targets. At a restaurant or similar facility, it is recommended that people have a look at what is going on around form time to time and place the belongings under their field of vision, never behind the chair.
19/07/2022 – The police arrested a criminal who robbed two women on 23 de Maio Av., in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. The criminal broke the window of the victims’ car and stole one of their cell phones. The robber ran away and got into his partners’ car but the police went after him and managed to arrest both.
20/07/2022 – Police officers arrested two teenagers who were transporting 400Kg of drugs in a luxury car in Downtown Sao Paulo. The vehicle was packed with tablets that came from Paraguay. The car was equipped with a smoke emitting system that would mislead the police in case of pursuit.
22/07/2022 – Criminals of the gangue da correntinha continue their violent attacks in Sao Paulo. A student was with a friend in broad daylight, when she was surprised by a group of minors who stole the small chain from her neck and knocked her down in the middle of the street, in Av. Paulista, in the Central Zone of Sao Paulo.
22/07/2022 – A prison officer was shot dead during a robbery on Felicíssimo de Souza St., in Vila Jaragua, in the North Zone of Sao Paulo, around 21h. The agent was followed by two criminals, who took advantage of a moment of distraction to rob his motorcycle.
23/07/2022 – A man was shot in the head during a robbery on Joaquim Lapas Veigas St., in Rio Pequena, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo, at 23h30. The victim was riding his motorcycle and stopped on the sidewalk to answer his phone. Two criminals, also on motorcycles, arrived and robbed him. The victim was to give his keys to the criminals, but they panicked and though he was going to react, so they shot him in the head.
Our analysis:
It is dangerous to stop in order to use your phone on the streets. By doing that, the driver becomes an easy target. Avoid using valuable devices on public spaces, especially where you could attract attention on you, just like the victim mentioned above.
25/07/2022 – A gas station attendant was shot dead after reacting to an attempted robbery at a gas station on Assis Ribeiro Av., in Cangaíba, in the East Zone of Sao Paulo, at night. Two criminals arrived and pretended to be customers. They asked to fill up a gallon of gasoline and then announced the robbery. The victim started to fight with them when one of the criminals shot him twice. Both bandits ran away.
26/07/2022 – Exclusive images released by Bom Dia São Paulo and TV Globo showed a gang of men and women robbing several people in the vicinity of the CPTM station Brás, in downtown Sao Paulo. In six days, 18 violent robberies were recorded on video in the region, not to mention the robberies that were not caught on camera.
27/07/2022 – Two criminals disguised as recyclable material collectors stole an old car parked in front of the house of two residents in the North Zone of Sao Paulo. The police believe that the crime is the work of a gang.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Stay away from any protest most likely to occur in the city center, including Avenida Paulista, the MASP, Praça do Ciclista, Praça da Sé, Largo da Batata and Praça da Republica.
- Monitor the local media in order to circumvent protest locations, including social media.
- If caught in a demonstration: remain still and take the time to see which way the crowd is going; attempt to leave the area by going against the movement of the crowd; avoid using your mobile phone, taking pictures or filming the demonstration; go to the nearest building as soon as possible and wait until the situation clears; try to avoid contact with security forces if possible.
- Considering the high crime rate in São Paulo, business travelers and expatriates should comply with safety rules in order to reduce the risk linked to violent crime. In case of an assault, it is strictly recommended not to resist the attackers and avoid making any sharp movement that may irritate the assailants, who do not hesitate to open fire.
