Fraud in the state of Sao Paulo has become a major problem along the years and it was aggravated by the Covid pandemic. According to the Datafolha survey conducted at the end of June 2022 in 61 municipalities of the state, 1 person out of 3 (33%) know someone who was victim of a bank fraud. The frauds have been facilitated by a larger use of bank applications, making it easier for people to transfer money from their smartphones for instance. Nevertheless, it is important to precise that more than half of the people interviewed who suffered fraud (57%) managed to get their money back, but unevenly. For instance, people earning between 5 to 10 salaries managed more easily to be reimbursed. According to the data, 86% of them are reimbursed the total stolen sum, while 42% of people are reimbursed the total sum when earning a minimum of 2 salaries. However, the survey also highlights the fact that criminals know to target people with money: people victim of bank fraud earn generally a minimum wage of R$ 6,000.

Robberies and thefts have hit the automobile sector since the beginning of the year in the city of Sao Paulo. Some of them concern very specific models of cars in specific neighborhoods of the city. According to Folha de Sao Paulo, among the 10 neighborhoods with the higher number of thefts, the East Zone is the first in the ranks, with 9 of its neighborhoods at the top of the list: 269 occurrences within the 4 first months of the year. Concerning robberies, the schema is more shared between the South and the East Zone with 5 robberies of Hyundai HB20 in each of these zones.
Since the dispersion of drug addicts from Praça Princesa Isabel in downtown Sao Paulo a few weeks ago, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) of the University of Sao Paulo found that at least 16 new places with concentrations of homeless people using drugs have emerged in the city. They gather, in the central region of the capital, from 20 to 200 users in each place. This may represent an increasing difficulty for law enforcement in dealing with drug dealers and violence, since drug users are now spread in different places of the center. The last days was for instance marked by events of destruction and violence against commercial establishments: 3 stores on Rua dos Gusmões suffered an invasion attempt. One of them, a snack bar, was even invaded while two others had their doors partially damaged. This led shopkeepers to hold a protest on Thursday (07/07) to demand a response from the local government.
08/07/2022 – A couple was violently help up and robbed on the sidewalk by criminals pretending to be deliverymen on motorcycles, in Brooklin neighborhood, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo.
08/07/2022 – Two suspects on bicycles stole a motorcycle estimated at R$ 50,000 in the afternoon, in Av. Brigadeiro Faria Lima, in Itaim Bibi, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo. Nobody has been arrested up to now.
11/07/2022 – Two Police vehicles were attacked with stones in the afternoon, in downtown Sao Paulo, in the Crackolândia region. No suspect has been arrested as of the last update. No police officer was injured.
12/07/2022 – A bandit was shot and killed while trying to rob a police officer who was inside a car with his family, stopped at a traffic light in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. The officer reacted and shot the criminal who was hit in the neck.
12/07/2022 – A passenger refused to comply with the sanitary rules which demand the use of masks inside buses in São Paulo city. After being asked to wear a mask by the bus driver, he spat on her, who called the police. While being arrested, he disarmed a police officer and shot her, in the East Zone of Sao Paulo.
12/07/2022 – Valdir Vieira Miranda, who had a preventive arrest warrant was arrested for rape in Palmas de Tremembé, in the North Zone of Sao Paulo.
12/07/2022 – When patrolling, police agents followed a man who left a bar and ran toward an alley in Morumbi, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo, around 21h. There, 15 people started to shoot at them. A shootout happened. The group then got dispersed and three people were shot and taken to the hospital. 4 other persons were arrested by the police.
13/07/2022 – A man was kidnapped in the parking lot of a restaurant in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. The victim was forced to complete PIX transactions superior to R$ 100,000 to the gang. He also had his luxury car, cell phone, computer and even his wedding ring stolen.
13/07/2022 – A criminal robbed a woman in front of a daycare center and stole the victim’s luxury car in Vila Prudente, in the East Zone of Sao Paulo. The victim’s son was present in the car. Then, while fleeing with the stolen car, the suspect ran over a couple who was on a motorcycle.
13/07/2022 – A couple found out criminals were invading their house; thus, they decided to leave their property and avoid the robbers. The incident took place in Jardim Peri, in the North Zone of Sao Paulo. After noticing that the couple had fled, the criminals gave up and escaped. This neighborhood is threatened since few weeks by the same criminals who rob shopkeepers, workers, and residents.
13/07/2022 – Civil police officers arrested two men suspected of robbing a store located inside the Shopping Metrô Tatuapé, in the East Zone of São Paulo. The robbery had happened on Friday (08/07). Four suspects entered the mall using a red Chevrolet Celta vehicle.
14/07/2022 – A couple was robbed by fake delivery men while getting in a car in Pinheiros, in the West Zone of Sao Paulo.
Our analysis:
Assaults on pedestrians, invasion of businesses and condominiums have been constant since a few weeks in the region of Pinheiros. To avoid being victim of the criminals on the loose, it is important to make sure to take every security measure possible: lock your house before leaving, avoid walking on the street with phones in hands, avoid showing any sign of wealth.
14/07/2022 – A gang of criminals robbed a bank in the afternoon at Av. Morumbi, in the neighborhood of the same name, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo. According to the police, at least 6 criminals robbed a branch, taking about two suitcases with money and a gun, which would belong to one of the security guards.
