02/01/2023 – A 24-year-old man was executed in Vila Matilde neighborhood, East Zone. He was killed by heavily armed criminals and the action was recorded by a security camera. The victim tried to react to the group’s approach but ended up being shot several times.

02/01/2023 – The Military Police arrested two men who tried to rob a house, on Rua José Serdeira Ribas, in Sacomã, South Zone. They tortured and held the residents hostage. Police received information that neighbors would be hearing screams from inside the house. The team went to the scene and located the victims, an elderly couple, tied and injured. A siege was mounted in front of the residence with the support of several vehicles. With the presence of officers, the two criminals tried to hide, but were found.
03/01/2023 – A woman was surrendered and robbed shortly after getting out of her car, in the Sacomã neighborhood, South Zone. The victim was going to take her mother to a doctor’s appointment when she was approached by a couple. The man was armed.
05/01/2023 – A man was arrested after stealing an US tourist’s cell phone in Sé, downtown São Paulo. According to the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM), the victim approached a team in Praça da Sé and reported that it had been stolen. He is from the United States, does not speak Portuguese and needed the help of one of the officers, who understands English, to explain what had happened. The officers managed to track the man’s device and saw that his location pointed to Cracolândia. Police officers carried out an operation in the region and found a man with suspicious attitudes. When approaching the criminal, they heard an alarm being issued by the cell phone that was in his pocket. The cell phone was then returned to the owner.
07/01/2023 – One criminal died and two fled after an attempted robbery of two military police officers on Rua do Glicério, in Liberdade, downtown São Paulo. According to the Military Police, the couple of officers were inside their car when they were approached by the criminals. The woman reacted and shot. The couple was not injured.
07/01/2023 – The Military Police arrested two people and released an app driver who was the victim of a kidnapping in the Itaim Paulista region, East Zone. Teams from the Metropolitan Military Police Battalion were on patrol in the region when they were approached by a woman who reported on the possible kidnapping of her colleague. According to the complainant, she realized that one of the drivers who was also on duty had been standing for a long time on the same street. After not having her calls answered by the man, she decided to go to where the cell phone’s location indicated. Upon arriving at the address, the woman did not find her colleague. Worried, she went to the nearest police unit. The agents began patrolling the area. The victim’s car was found and after a brief chase the criminals were arrested.
09/01/2023 – A man was freed after falling into the dating app scam and spending more than 12 hours in captivity in the Perus region, North Zone. According to the Military Police, the victim made an appointment on a dating app and drove to the agreed location on Sunday (08/01). There, he was surprised by the criminals and taken into custody on Rua Aristeu. They made bank transfers from the victim’s accounts, but one of the banks blocked the transactions until 16:00 on Monday. The criminals’ intention was to release him only after that time. The group used the victim’s cards in their machines and took photos and documents from him to try to make loans. Military Police teams were in the region and approached the trio, as one of them had a card machine, the officers decided to enter the house and found the victim on the top floor.

10/01/2023 – A woman was robbed in front of a condominium in the neighborhood of Saúde, South Zone. Two criminals took the victim’s purse and car. The woman reported to the police, and they started a pursuit of the criminals and managed to arrest one of them. The other fled with the victim’s vehicle. 12/01/2023 – Two men who were part of a gang specialized in residential burglary were killed during a shooting with police officers from Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (Rota) on Rua da Consolação, in the Consolação neighborhood, in downtown São Paulo.
15/01/2023 – A criminal invaded a building in Vila Sabrina, in São Paulo’s North Zone, at 00:00, broke in a car and stole its battery. Three days before he had committed the same crime in the location, and even though he was filmed by the building’s CCTV, he repeated the crime.
16/01/2023 – A man stabbed his own wife inside a subway wagon on Line 12 – Safira, next to Engenheiro Goulart station, in São Paulo’s East Zone. Other passengers were able to stop him, and he was detained. One other passenger was hurt while stopping him.
Recommendation:
In Brazil, one of the most numerous crimes is feminicide and aggressions committed by men, boyfriends, and husbands against wives or girlfriends. Most incidents happen in private locations, but it is not uncommon to witness one on the streets. Cases have been rising significantly, likely due to the public campaigns incentivizing women to denounce their partners. Even though it is not a crime that has a clear impact on business, there is a clear moral issue involved in assaults happening in public, especially when the victim is very vulnerable. The recommended thing to do is to first try to contact or find local security forces to intervene. Without proper training or protective equipment, attempting to detain an aggressor can result in serious physical harm and even death.
17/01/2023 – The Civil Police arrested 38 people during a mega operation against a criminal group investigated for the R$ 14 million robbery that occurred in Itaim Bibi, South Zone of São Paulo, in August last year. 77 search and seizure warrants, and 76 arrest warrants were issued in 16 cities in São Paulo, and six other states. The gang rented a commercial room in a building in Itaim Bibi and for days, the suspects monitored the movements of a real estate development company that they robbed.
Our Analysis:
When the incident was first reported, police revealed that criminals remained for several hours inside the company. Even though not many details of the incident were made public, with such time to respond, it is reasonable to say that a panic button could have helped to detain the criminals on the spot, by silently calling the police or a private security service to surround the location and prevent the robbers to escape.
17/01/2023 – 3 criminals approached a motorcyclist on Nove de Julho Ave. in Jardim Paulista, in São Paulo’s South Zone, to rob him, but the victim reacted and was shot by one of them. The criminals escaped on the stolen motorcycle, but were arrested moments later. The victim died.
19/01/2023 – Criminals armed with assault rifles shot and killed a security guard in a store in Grajaú. In São Paulo’s South Zone, at 19:00. Two other people were also harmed. The murderers did not steal anything.
20/01/2023 – Three armed criminals tried to rob an off-duty police officer as he arrived in a veterinary clinic in Vila Maria, in São Paulo’s North Zone, at 02:30. He reacted and shot against the criminals, who fled. One criminal was shot dead.
22/01/2023 – An Italian businessman was killed and his body was burned inside a car in Jardim Ângela, in São Paulo’s South Zone. His house was also burgled. The police suspects that the murderer is an employee that had a discussion with him.
23/01/2023 – A reporter from Balanço Geral Manhã, on Record TV, suffered a robbery attempt while waiting to go live to the channel on Rua Barão de Itapetininga, downtown São Paulo, at 6:30. The criminal was on bicycle and approached the victim at high speed. When he got close to the victim, the criminal slowed down and reached out to snatch the cell phone. The reporter, however, was quick and managed to protect himself from the crime.
24/01/2023 – An off-duty police chief was shot twice by two criminals on a motorcycle during a supposed robbery attempt in Vila Mariana, in São Paulo’s South Zone, next to the crossing of Rua Domingos de Morais and Rua Francisco Cruz.
24/01/2023 – A criminal on a motorcycle shot an off-duty police officer in front of his house in Casa Verde, in São Paulo’s North Zone.
25/01/2023 – An armed criminal tried to rob a family inside a house in Cidade Líder, in São Paulo’s East Zone, but one of the victim’s reacted and fought with the criminal. The criminal fell from the stairs and died.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Stay away from any protest most likely to occur in the city center, including Avenida Paulista, the MASP, Praça do Ciclista, Praça da Sé, Largo da Batata and Praça da Republica.
- Monitor the local media in order to circumvent protest locations, including social media.
- If caught in a demonstration: remain still and take the time to see which way the crowd is going; attempt to leave the area by going against the movement of the crowd; avoid using your mobile phone, taking pictures or filming the demonstration; go to the nearest building as soon as possible and wait until the situation clears; try to avoid contact with security forces if possible.
- Considering the high crime rate in São Paulo, business travelers and expatriates should comply with safety rules in order to reduce the risk linked to violent crime. In case of an assault, it is strictly recommended not to resist the attackers and avoid making any sharp movement that may irritate the assailants, who do not hesitate to open fire.
- Avoid, if possible, circulating through the neighborhoods in the East Zone due to the high rates of various crimes.
- Pay attention when trying to meet new people on the internet as criminals use the dating app and social networks to apply scams.
- Due to several police operations, drug users previously concentrated in a region called “Cracolândia” have spread across downtown, leading to an increase in petty crimes. Hence, avoid walking around with your cell phone in your hand, in addition to wearing jewels and expensive watches.
- The number of express kidnappings has increased lately due to a new method (PIX) that allows people to easily transfer money using bank apps. Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence.
- Attention to the windows when inside a vehicle. Keep them closed, as criminals use heavy traffic to rob passengers that expose valuables.
