Downtown São Paulo registers, on average, one theft every 30 minutes. This is what a survey carried out by SP1 based on data from the State Secretariat for Public Security (SSP) shows. In all, 13,478 occurrences of theft were recorded in the eight police stations in the central region between January and July of this year — the highest number for the period since the beginning of the department’s historical series, in 2001. The Police District (DP) of Campos Elíseos was which recorded the most robberies, with 4,398 occurrences, followed by the DP da Liberdade, with 2,910.

The high crime rate, associated with the presence of the Cracolândia flow, has directly impacted the lives of residents and traders in the region. The region reflects the spiral of violence in São Paulo. The problem has been going on for decades and is treated in different ways with each new administration. In recent years, the city hall and the state began to carry out police actions to disperse drug users who were concentrated in certain streets. The measure caused users to spread across the region and affected the lives of merchants and residents, who report an increase in violence and insecurity. The perspectives are not of improvement, especially with the potential presence of militias, corrupt security forces and the entrance of new cheap drugs, such as fentanyl and the artificial marijuana or K drugs.
25/08/2023 – A man was arrested after trying to rob a motorcycle delivery man and being attacked in Bom Retiro, downtown São Paulo. Surveillance cameras caught the incident. Three criminals, divided into two motorcycles, approach the victim. After the robbery, two criminals fled, and one stayed behind. Several people who were close to the scene gather and surround the man, who was assaulted.
27/08/2023 – A group of 17 armed men invaded a condominium of houses in Jardim Paulistano, South Zone. The bandits took jewelry, cars, cell phones and money from residents. They arrived at the scene around 3h30, overpowered the doorman and then invaded two homes. Residents reported that all the robbers wore masks and radio communicators and that some people were taken hostage in the janitor’s room. The gang would have taken R$ 3 million in jewelry. The criminals fled in stolen cars.
28/08/2023 – A caretaker was found dead, with signs of aggression with sticks, inside a residence on Rua Joaquim Nabuco, in Brooklin, South Zone. The victim had been missing for days. His body was located after family members were unable to contact him and triggered the Military Police (PM). So far there are no details about the dynamics or the perpetrators of the crime.
30/08/2023 – Three criminals invaded and carried out thefts inside a bookstore on Avenida Paulista, in the Bela Vista neighborhood in downtown São Paulo. They took advantage of the victims being distracted during a book launch event to steal personal items. The three managed to escape.
30/08/2023 – Security cameras recorded the moment when three armed men robbed a clothing store in Vila Joaniza, South Zone. The bandits entered the store and robbed employees and customers. According to the store owner, while customers and employees were being held hostage, one of the criminals shot the security guard, who was grazed in the leg. Military police officers who were in the region heard the shot, went to the store, and managed to arrest the three bandits.
30/08/2023 – Two men were found dead, one inside and the other outside a shelter in Barra Funda, West Zone. Both cases were registered as suspicious deaths and there is still no information about the identity of the victims. A third man, who was also in that shelter, was taken to hospital. The Civil Police is investigating.
31/08/2023 – The Metropolitan Civil Guard arrested two drug traffickers selling drugs in Cracolândia, in the Campos Elísios neighborhood, downtown São Paulo. Both tried to flee, but were arrested and with them, the police found drugs, money, a stolen cell phone and several electronic cigarettes, valued at R$ 47,000.
31/08/2023 – An army soldier was shot in the south zone of São Paulo. According to witnesses, two men in a vehicle approached the soldier’s vehicle and started firing shots. The victim was going to a shooting range. The Military Police are investigating whether it was an attempted robbery or an attempted murder.
01/09/2023 – A suitcase with an alleged bomb inside it was abandoned in a Caixa Econômica Federal branch in Bela Vista, downtown São Paulo. According to the Military Police, the call occurred at 7:46 to Avenida Treze de Maio. So far it has not been confirmed whether there is an explosive object inside the suitcase.
