03/11/2023 – Two men were shot inside a car on Estrada dos Bandeirantes, in Curicica, West Zone. The Military Police confirmed that the two men were shot in the foot and shoulder. One of them died and the other remains hospitalized. Witnesses stated that those shot were militiamen, and that the shooters were in another vehicle.

06/11/2023 – Militiamen and drug traffickers had a shooting in the Muzema region, West Zone. The Military Police were called to the incident. When the police arrived, the criminals fled. The community was one of those that received the Integrated City project, in January last year. The initiative aimed to retake territory from communities dominated by militia and drug trafficking. According to the Military Police, the location was the scene of a confrontation between rival criminal groups. So far, there are no reports of injuries in the action.
07/11/2023 – Investigations by the Portuguese Judicial Police with the support of the Federal Police, discovered that employees of the Portuguese Consulate in Rio charged up to 300 euros, around R$1,500, to jump the queue and obtain Portuguese citizenship documents. Police officers stationed at the Rio de Janeiro International Cooperation Center (NCI/INTERPOL/PF) carried out five search and seizure warrant in Rio de Janeiro. The agents are investigating whether the scheme had even been used by traffickers from the First Capital Command (PCC) to travel to the European country. Intelligence data from Portugal indicate that the European country currently has around a thousand members of the São Paulo faction.
08/11/2023 – A 52-year-old woman died after an attempted robbery in Irajá, North Zone. Her husband said that they were approached by criminals on Rua Guiraréia. Ana Paula ended up shot and was taken to hospital but did not survive. The Capital Homicide Police were called to investigate the crime.
08/11/2023 – A civil police officer died after reacting to a robbery and killing a criminal on Avenida Lúcio Costa, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. He was leaving a restaurant when he was captured by two criminals. Wellington was being investigated for possible involvement with the militia. The Homicide Police are investigating the crime.
09/11/2023 – Mass robberies were recorded at the exit of the Mexican group RBD’s concert in Engenhão, North Zone. According to witnesses, at least 2 mass robberies occurred when the public was lefting the stadium towards the Engenho de Dentro train station, shortly before midnight.
11/11/2023 – Four criminals were arrested by the Military Police for breaking into a condominium in the Freguesia, West Zone. Two of the prisoners were injured. According to witnesses, the bandits invaded the place and ran into a forested area. According to the PM, officers carried out a tactical siege of criminals between the Freguesia and the community of Rio das Pedras. A rifle and ammunition were seized.
12/11/2023 – The children of singer Arlindo Cruz, Arlindinho and Flora Cruz, were robbed after a concert in honor of their father in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. In addition to the siblings, a producer was also targeted by criminals. On social media, the artists’ production team announced what had happened, and that the three’s cell phones had been taken.
15/11/2023 – A man was shot as he was leaving a motel on Avenida Brasil, in Realengo, West Zone. The man was on a motorcycle and was approached by armed criminals, who fired several shots. Images from a security camera at the establishment recorded the moment of the crime. According to the Civil Police, the victim was interviewed and claimed that he had suffered an attempted robbery. In a statement, the Civil Police said they are investigating whether he is involved with militiamen in the region.
16/11/2023 – Agents from Security Presente, from Copacabana, South Zone, arrested Lucas Nazaré dos Santos. He is suspected of breaking into the apartment of an 81-year-old woman and stealing around R$10,000 worth of jewelry. According to Security Presente, Lucas and another man tried to scam the elderly woman, posing as IRS inspectors.
17/11/2023 – Roberto da Silva Batista was arrested for raping a vulnerable person in Copacabana, South Zone. The crime happened on Tuesday (14/11), when a 19-year-old girl was returning from Pedra do Sal, downtown Rio, and going home. According to investigations, the man raped the woman at a construction site on Rua Xavier da Silveira.
17/11/2023 – Two men were killed at a club on Avenida Brasil, in the Guadalupe neighborhood, North Zone. According to information from the Military Police, officers received information about a shooting in the location. When they arrived at the scene, they found two dead men. The two men have not yet been identified, and the police are investigating who committed the crime.
19/11/2023 – A tourist from Mato Grosso do Sul was killed at dawn in an attempted robbery on Copacabana beach, South Zone. Three criminals were arrested. The victim is Gabriel Mongenot Santana Milhomem Santos, 25 years old. He was in the city for singer Taylor Swift’s concert at the Engenhão Stadium. The cousins said that Gabriel dozed on the sand while his friends talked. At that moment, they were approached by the bandits. Gabriel woke up in the middle of the robbery and was attacked.
20/11/2023 – State deputy Marcelo Dino (União Brasil) had his car hit by two shots as he passed along Avenida Brasil, near the entrance to Vila Kennedy, West Zone. Dino was returning from a family trip when he mistakenly entered the neighborhood following GPS guidance. Upon noticing barricades, he tried to leave the place quickly. That’s when he and his relatives were surprised by heavily armed bandits who approached and shot at the deputy’s armored car.
22/11/2023 – The Civil Police arrested a man identified as one of the main drug suppliers for communities dominated by Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro. He was in a luxury apartment in Ipanema, in the South Zone. Nicknamed King, he operated an air route with small aircraft that went to Mato Grosso do Sul and, from there, by vehicle until reaching the Rio communities. According to investigations, the gang is also responsible for shipping cocaine to Brazil using a small plane transport scheme, establishing connections and drug trafficking routes with Nigerian citizens living in São Paulo.
22/11/2023 – Actress Isabelle Drummond was robbed in Leblon, South Zone. She was with a friend when they were captured by the criminals. Her belongings, those of her friend and the driver were taken by four criminals. According to the police, the criminals carried out several robberies during the night.
23/11/2023 – Fred Guedes, former player, and current director of Fluminense, was robbed in Ipanema, South Zone. The former striker was returning from Maracanã Stadium when he was captured. The criminal pointed a gun at his’s head and took his car and cell phone.
25/11/2023 – A man identified as Guilherme Carvalho, aged 18, was shot and killed during a demonstration on Avenida Brasil, near Vila Kennedy, West Zone. According to reports from residents, a black car passed by shooting at protesters, who were protesting the death of motorcycle taxi driver Eberson Luiz Santos da Silva. Eberson was shot during a Military Police action in the community. Guilherme Carvalho was reportedly killed by an off-duty police officer.
25/11/2023 – Two criminals broke into and robbed a jewelry store in the Vogue Square shopping mall, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. Security footage shows the thieves trying to break into the place. After entering, the men go to the closet where all the establishment’s gold was stored. The action lasted around 5 minutes, but generated a loss of around R$250,000, according to the business owner. The criminals wore wigs and glasses to hinder identification, so it is not known for sure how many people participated in the crime.
28/11/2023 – Two National Force officers, in a vehicle, mistakenly entered Rua Fernando Lobo, in Guadalupe, close to the Community of Chapadão, North Zone. They were approached by local drug dealers, had their weapons stolen and were released. According to the Military Police, an emergency operation was organized to recover the two pistols that were with the agents.
28/11/2023 – A National Force officer was shot and killed at the door of the house where he was living in Vila Valqueire, West Zone. Soldier Edmar Felipe Alves dos Santos was 36 years old and came from Alagoas. Edmar was surprised when he came out of the gate, armed, after hearing gunshots in a neighboring residence, on Rua Mário Barbedo. The criminal, identified as Eduardo Santa Rita Carvalho, aged 24, was fleeing after shooting his partner, and shot Edmar twice, hitting him in the head.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- During summer months, mass robberies and thefts in touristic spots become the most prevalent security risks in Rio de Janeiro, specially in the city’s South Zone.
- Crowded beaches and its vicinities should be avoided.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, cell phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as he or she might not be alone or turn violent.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move unless you are sure that the gunfire has ended.
- Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas or beaches after nightfall. Avoid walking through tunnels.
- Avoid the vicinity of crime-prone areas such as ‘communities’ (so-called ‘favelas’) and lower-income neighborhoods.
- Be always cautious, even in the areas considered safe such as Downtown, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. Exercise caution in the Centro during the day and avoid the area after nightfall and on Sundays.
- Be careful when using the GPS as they may lead you to unsafe areas controlled by organized crime. Prefere Cooperative taxis instead of driving yourself.
