Several pedestrian robberies in Ipanema, Rio South Zone, were recorded by security cameras between May and June. Statistics from the Institute of Public Security (ISP) show that this type of robberies grew, between January and April 2022, compared to the same period last year. In Ipanema, had a 21,1% increase, and in Leblon, cases rose by 32%. Two cases were recorded in two days (17 and 18/06). On the 17th, a group of young people was robbed by two men, one of them riding a bicycle. On Saturday’s crime (18/06), a fake app delivery guy arrives on a bike and approaches two people. One of the victims tries to hold the criminal’s arm who shoots. Nobody got hurt. The victims fell to the ground and the suspect collected their belongings and fled. In addition to the stolen cell phone, R$ 70.000 were diverted from the victim’s bank account using the bank application installed on the device.

Rio de Janeiro spends, every month, R$ 250.000 because of cable theft. In May, 302 cases of cable theft and robbery were registered in the city. The cost is R$ 3 million per year. CET-Rio, responsible for traffic monitoring, claims that it lost R$ 5 million last year with the same problem. Throughout this year, more than 450 cases of theft and robberies were registered. There were 23.000 meters of cables carried. February was the month that recorded the most crimes, with 9.000 meters being stolen. To try to minimize the damage, the city says it is installing grids and cameras to protect its wiring.
16/06/2022 – Criminals shot a man during a robbery in Taquara, West Zone. The victim was passing through Largo da Capela when he was approached by the robbers and, even after handing over everything he had, he was still shot by the criminals, who fled with money, cell phone and documents.
16/06/2022 – A retired civil police officer was shot dead by two criminals in the backyard of his home in Olaria neighbourhood, North Zone.
18/06/2022 – A shooting in Realengo, West Zone, ended with one suspect arrested, another one shot, and a military police officer wounded in the forehead. According to Military Police, agents were patrolling Manoel Nogueira de Sá Road, near Jardim Novo Community, when they noticed two armed men on a motorcycle. Police chased the pair into the community, where there was a shootout.
Our analysis:
There is always an expressive risk of shooting in most police operations. Before leaving home or work, people in the area must also check if shootouts or mass robberies have been related in the past few hours to avoid getting caught in the middle of a dangerous situation. Stray bullets are a real threat in Rio de Janeiro, and the proper security protocols must be followed to guarantee personnel safety like: seeking shelter in nearby buildings; laying down on the floor near robust obstacles; staying away from doors and windows; and giving extra protection to children.
18/06/2022 – A suspect was shot, and an elderly man was injured after a chase with gunfire that ended with the collision of two vehicles. According to the Military Police, the case took place after a group that committed crimes in Ladeira da Glória.
18/06/2022 – A fight in a nightclub in Piedade, North Zone, between army soldiers and a Military Police officer ended with one of the agents shot in the head. The police officer was arrested for attempted murder against an army soldier. According to the Civil Police, the fight would have started after Army agents approached a woman.
20/06/2022 – Police and justice officials carried out the interdiction of a tire shop in Ramos, North Zone. On Friday (16/06), the establishment had already received a search and seizure warrant. On the same occasion, the manager and one of the mechanics were arrested for the crime of fraud. According to the investigation, during the replacement of accessories, store employees removed new parts from vehicles claiming they had issues, forcing drivers to pay even more for the repair.
20/06/2022 – Military Police carried out an operation in the communities of Cidade de Deus, Jordão, Santa Maria, Teixeiras, Bateau Mouche, Barão and Covanca, all located in Jacarepaguá, West Zone.
20/06/2022 – One suspect was killed, and three others were arrested in a Military Police operation in Kelson’s Favela, Penha, North Zone. The operation was carried out to combat drug trafficking and vehicle theft and to remove barricades that were at the entrance of the community. The police seized a rifle, two pistols, grenades, two vehicles and drugs.
21/06/2022 – A retired military police officer was shot in the face during an attempted robbery in Bangu, West Zone. According to witnesses, the officer reacted to a robbery in front of his house and ended up shot in the face.
21/06/2022 – A woman and her daughters kidnapped a five-month-old baby in Inhaúma. They approached the family about a month ago telling the family they would make donations for the baby. The kidnapping only ended 24 hours later, on this Wednesday (22/06), after police officers managed to convince the kidnappers to return the baby. The child was left in a square in Santissimo, West Zone.
22/06/2022 – The Military Police carried out an operation in communities on Ilha do Governador, North Zone. The communities were: Dendê, Guarabú, Bancários, Praia da Rosa, Querosene and Parque Royal.
22/06/2022 – A Brazilian men was arrested while transporting about 7 kg of cocaine at Rio de Janeiro International Airport (Galeão). Federal Police found the drug hidden in one of the kitesurfing equipment, also known as “pipa”.
22/06/2022 – A woman was robbed while trying to enter the garage of her building in Freguesia, Zona Oeste. Criminals forced the woman out of the car and took a watch, jewellery, and wallet. In addition, they forced the woman to pass the cell phone passwords where they made several money transfers.
23/06/2022 – Two drug sales points in downtown Rio were targeted by Civil Police. Investigations pointed out that robberies and thefts close to Praça da República were to be exchanged for drugs in these drug sales points. Six people were arrested for drug trafficking. One suspect reacted and was shot by the police. A firearm, drugs and a fake firearm were seized.
24/06/2022 – A shooting between suspects and military police officers from the Expressway Police Battalion (BPVE), on Avenida Brasil, in Ramos neighbourhood, North Zone, left one suspect dead and two arrested.
24/06/2022 – An app driver was arrested by police officers from the Women’s Service Station (DEAM) suspected of raping a passenger during a ride in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. Civil Police say the suspect ‘took advantage of the passenger’s drunken state’, went to the back seat, and committed the crime.
25/06/2022 – A security guard died during an exchange of fire with robbers at the Village Mall, a luxury mall in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone of Rio, on Saturday (25). According to witnesses, the confrontation took place around 18h, after an attempted robbery of a jewellery store in the shopping mall. An employee was even taken hostage in the criminals’ escape but was later released. Twelve bandits took part in the action, armed with pistols and long-barreled weapons. According to reports from people who were at the scene, dozens of shots were fired inside and outside the mall.
