The number of criminals fleeing from other states and seeking refuge in communities in Rio de Janeiro has been growing. Last year alone, the Military Police arrested 379 criminals in large favelas. And investigators suspect that dozens of fugitives are still hiding in the Metropolitan Region. TV Globo had access to public security data that indicate that at least 67, from 10 states, are hidden in RJ. According to the Civil Police, in the last 5 years, 78 heads of factions from other states were arrested or killed in actions in Rio. They are criminals from 18 states across the country. The main communities that serve as a hiding spot in Rio are: Complexo do Salgueiro (São Gonçalo), Complexo da Penha (North Zone), Complexo do Alemão (North Zone), Complexo da Maré (North Zone) and Rocinha (South Zone).

Another important factor is the faction that operates in the favela where the criminal originates and, in the place where he will hide. There is cooperation between criminals to protect themselves. Professor Lenin Pires, from the Department of Public Security at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), says the solutions involve reaching the factions economically, targeting drug trafficking routes.
01/07/2023 – An 89-year-old man was deceived and robbed by scammers in Jacarepaguá, West Zone. The pensioner was leaving after using the ATM when two criminals called him saying that there was a problem with his card. Criminals switched the elderly card for someone else’s and stole all the money he had in his account.
01/07/2023 – Two people were shot at a motel on Rua Miguel Ângelo, in the Cachambi neighborhood, North Zone. According to the Military Police, officers were triggered and found the victims injured by firearm shots. Police did not disclose what happened.
01/07/2023 – Former player Donizete Pantera was robbed by men armed with rifles as he passed Avenida Brasil, close to Complexo da Maré, North Zone. He was going to Volta Redonda when he was overtaken by five bandits, who took his car, a Land Rover Velar, and his belongings.
02/07/2023 – Three men, including a military police officer, were arrested for kidnapping during a joint action by the Civil and Military Police. They had a victim inside a car that was approached in Parada de Lucas, North Zone. When the vehicle was approached by the officers, the victim screamed for help. In testimony, the victim said that the men went to collect a debt and that he had been threatened with death.
02/07/2023 – The Federal Police discovered a gang that falsified documents from medical schools to obtain records and sell them to fake doctors, four people were arrested. At least 65 records were obtained with false documents in Rio de Janeiro. The suspects created false documents very similar to originals.
03/07/2023 – The Military Police (PM) arrested a criminal known as Léo 18 during an operation in Morro do Dezoito, in Água Santa, North Zone. He would be one of the drug lords in the region. During the action, PMs seized a pistol, drugs, and a stolen luxury car. And they also removed barricades, which made police action in the community more difficult.
04/07/2023 – An operation by the Civil and Military Police in Complexo da Maré, North Zone, ended with seven criminals arrested, one dead and 25 cars seized, including a Porsche Macan. A seven-month pregnant woman was injured during the shooting. The action was aimed at arresting criminals involved in vehicle robberies. Marijuana, two rifles and three pistols were also seized.
04/07/2023 – An 82-year-old lady was found dead inside her house on Rua Henrique Chaves, in São Cristóvão, North Zone. She was tied up and with signs of beating. The Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC) launched an inquiry to investigate the case. For now, the police believe in robbery followed by death.
04/07/2023 – A teenager was hit by a pellet gun in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. The 16-year-old boy was on the soccer field at the Palm Springs condominium with friends when the bullet hit him.
05/07/2023 – Six employees of Supervia – company that manages trains in Rio – were robbed by an armed man at the Marechal Hermes station, North Zone. They were forced to hand over cell phones and personal belongings.
05/07/2023 – During a shooting with military police, criminals threw a grenade. According to the corporation, officers were on patrol when bandits started shooting in the Chacrinha community. The shooting left part of Estrada da Chácara, in Praça Seca, West Zone, blocked. No one was hurt.
07/07/2023 – Military Police (PM) carried out an operation in the community of Manguinhos, North Zone. The action was from the Pacifying Police Coordination (CPP) and aimed to combat drug trafficking, car and cargo robbery. Residents reported shootings in the area. The PM confirmed that an officer was injured in a confrontation.
