09/11/2022 – Two residents of Gardênia Azul, West Zone, were injured during a shooting between militiamen, in a war for control of the region. During the shooting, a group fled the community and stole a car on Avenida Ayrton Sena. The Military Police were called, but the shooting had already ended when officers arrived.

10/12/2022 – Actor Thiago Rodrigues, 42, was robbed and beaten by criminals in Gávea, South Zone. According to Thiago, he was leaving a bar when he was surrounded by five men who wanted to rob him and, when trying to escape, the actor was brutally attacked. Thiago only woke up on Sunday morning (11/12), being cared for by a shopkeeper who exhibits at the antiques fair in Praça Santos Dumont, and who helped him be taken to the hospital.
10/12/2022 – Criminals stole bullet proof car on Avenida Carlos Peixoto, in Botafogo, South Zone. A security camera caught the criminals’ action, which lasted less than a minute. A businessman was standing at the entrance to his girlfriend’s building, waiting for her and her mother, when the criminals arrived in a black car. They fled taking the vehicle. According to the businessman, even though the vehicle was armored, he did not react for fear that they would do something to his mother and girlfriend, who were already at the gate.
11/12/2022 – A military police officer died after a shooting in the community of Tirol, in Freguesia, West Zone. A criminal also died. PMs from the Jacarepaguá Battalion were called after receiving information that criminals were gathering on Timbuaçu Street. Upon arriving at the scene, according to the PM, there would have been a shootout.
12/12/2022 – A 44-year-old military police officer died after being shot in a shooting on Avenida Brasil, near Bonsucesso, North Zone. According to the first investigation information, he was escorting a truck carrying electronic products and was surrounded by criminals.
12/12/2022 – The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested a woman who is accused of being responsible for a scam in which she seduced men to gain access to bank applications on their cell phones. After that, she cleaned the victims’ accounts. The delegate stated that the woman doped the victims after seducing them to apply the scam.
14/12/2022 – A 17-year-old teenager died, and a young man was injured after being attacked by criminals armed with knives in an attempted robbery on walkway 3 of the Linha Amarela Express Road. According to the military police, they were on a motorcycle when they were surprised by the criminals.
14/11/2022 – Civil Police from the Anti-Kidnapping Police Station (DAS) arrested seven members of a gang that practiced scams by telling them a lie, that the victims’ relatives were kidnapped by them. After deceiving the target, criminals demanded payments on transfers via PIX. The arrests were made in Rocinha, a community in the South Zone.
Our Analysis:
The phone rings. The number is not in your phone book, or the call comes without identification. The scam is simple, it works by trial and error and has been causing significant financial losses to the victims, but its greatest impact is psychological, because during the scam the person is hit by high adrenaline discharges and in some cases fear or panic spreads, quickly and permanently even after its end. The fake kidnapping scam is applied throughout Brazil and successfully. The criminal chooses random numbers and begins the search for the ideal victim. In the first lines by tone of voice the script is chosen. If they hear the voice of a mature person, they will say quickly and in an unclear voice “mom, mom I was kidnapped, I was kidnapped…” or “dad, dad I was kidnapped, don’t call the police, do what they say”. If they hear a voice that indicates youth, the word “son or daughter” will be pronounced and then the same person will play the role of the kidnapper and will utter threats and list the demands. Every phrase said by the victim provides information and instrumentalizes the criminal’s dialogue. Aiming at not allowing the victim to be able to process the information clearly and/or locate their relative (allegedly kidnapped), the call is not interrupted or is made in short intervals of one to two minutes. To provide a greater sense of reality, it is common for the scam to be applied by more than one person. In most cases such actions are practiced by prisoners, with enough free time to calmly think about how best to construct their dramatization. At the time of the dialogue, a test value is said at random in order to understand the financial capacity of the victim. The most common way of conducting negotiations is to require victims to make deposits or bank transfers.
15/12/2022 – Dozens of people tried to break into a woman’s house in Santa Margarida, in the Cosmos neighborhood, West Zone, to attack her. The reason would be posts from a profile on a social network created to defame residents. The population thought she was responsible and went to the place to assault her. The young woman was only able to leave the house escorted by officers of the Campo Grande Battalion.
15/12/2022 – A man was hit by a rifle shot in the Jacarezinho community, North Zone. A video recorded by a resident shows the victim lying on the ground and claims that he would be an app driver. According to the Military Police, officers from the UPP in Jacarezinho went to approach the victim’s car, the police say that the driver did not obey the order to stop and there was an accidental gunshot.
15/12/2022 – A man was arrested for assaulting a woman in Praça da Bandeira, in the North Zone. Municipal guards went to verify a complaint and, as they passed through Rua João Paulo Primeiro, they caught the man assaulting the woman and trying to throw her into a ditch.
