A law sanctioned by Mayor Ricardo Nunes in the city of São Paulo, on Tuesday (17), established that bank agencies must install safes to store firearms used by security guards in the establishment to prevent robberies and thefts. The changes must be made until January 2024.
According to the author of the project, Councilman Delegado Palumbo (MDB), the law was based on a request made by a police station that investigates bank robberies. According to this police station, these weapons are usually kept in drawers or cabinets. On average, criminals are able to enter the agencies and steal four or five guns in five minutes. They come at night, on weekends or holidays.
A survey made by Instituto Sou da Paz analyzed 23.709 reports of weapon robberies between the years 2011 and 2020 in the state. In this period, there was an average of 6,49 reports per day, each of which can be linked to one or more weapons, raising the average to 9 weapons diverted per day in 10 years.
The places with the highest number of diverted weapons are public offices (courts and police stations), private security companies, banks and homes of CACs (hunters, shooters and collectors).
