On Friday (27/05), Supreme Court (STF) Minister Luiz Edson Fachin ordered Rio de Janeiro state government to listen to suggestions from the Public Ministry, the Public Defender’s Office and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) on how to reduce deaths in police operations. Fachin is the rapporteur of an action in which the STF ordered the government of Rio de Janeiro to prepare a plan to reduce police lethality in operations. In this Friday’s decision, the minister also gave 30 days, after hearing the authorities, for the state to hold a public hearing to gather suggestions on the subject. The decision comes after a police operation in Vila Cruzeiro that resulted in the death of at least 23 people.
