A request made by the Brazilian Armed Forces to buy more than 200 Javelin portable anti-tank missiles, one of the most advanced models on the planet, has been blocked for months in Washington.
The reason for the obstruction, according to a report by the Reuters agency, are concerns of US lawmakers with President Jair Bolsonaro and his attacks on the smoothness of the Brazilian electoral system.
The purchase, which can reach up to US$100 million, was originally requested when former President Donald Trump, an ally of Bolsonaro, was still in the White House. Already under Biden’s command, the US State Department gave its approval for the sale at the end of 2021. However, the negotiation is in a limbo.
A source told Reuters that it is being held back by Democratic lawmakers in Congress and is “not going anywhere in the short term”.
