Even though the election period came to an end many months ago, incidents of political violence are still being reported across the country. On 19 March, according to witnesses, a 36-year-old man, Valter Fernando Da Silva, was shot dead by Edno Abadia Borges, a 60-year-old farmer, in Jaciara, Mato Grosso (MT). Based on information given by witnesses, the police believes that the reason behind the crime was a political argument.
Bolsonaro and Lula
The suspect and the victim knew each other and had a close relation. Witnesses heard by the police reported that Edno Borges and Valter da Silva consumed alcoholic beverages throughout the night, while they were at a bar.
While drinking and talking they argued because the victim was defending former president Jair Bolsonaro, and the suspect, President Lula. This divergence caused tempers to become tense. Then, the reports collected in the investigation, suggest that Edno invited the victim to go to his truck, outside the bar. Upon arriving there, Valter was shot by Edno, who then fled.
Political Movement Still Active
Despite Bolsonaro’s defeat for Lula in the last elections and the former President permanence in the United States, the political movement that formed around him throughout the past few years has resisted. Thus, the political polarization that emerged and divided the country too. The great number of senators, federal deputies and other political actors that are aligned to Bolsonaro count to strengthen his position here.
