SUPERIOR ELECTORAL COURT TO INVEST R$ 100 MI IN SECURITY DURING ELECTIONS

Superior Electoral Court (TSE) President Alexandre de Moraes informed the Military Police that the Electoral Justice will invest around R$ 100 million in the security of this year’s elections. These R$ 100 million announced by Moraes will be used by the Armed Forces and the police.

Meeting with the Military Police

The investment was announced after a meeting with 23 Military Police commanders and four representatives of the military police from the states, which took place on Wednesday (24/08). This type of security operation to guarantee the election’s peace will be reinforced this year due to the “polarization”, which intensifies the mood of voters.

During the meeting, the general commanders of the polices in the states brought up their perception of local public security in relation to the election and presented several proposals to try to guarantee security in the election.

It was agreed to install an intelligence nucleus in the presidency of the TSE composed of three appointed by the Court and three by the National Council of General Commanders (CNCG), with the objective of analyzing the information produced by the police in the country.

Restrictions to Carry Weapons During the Election Day

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is due to vote on Tuesday (30/08) a proposal to restrict the carrying of weapons on election day. The discussion will deal with a public consultation made by nine opposition parties to the Federal Government. The group’s proposal is that the entry and circulation of armed people be prohibited at polling stations on 2 and 30 October, when the first and second rounds of the election will be held, respectively. For these parties, only members of the security forces in the exercise of police activity should be allowed to carry weapons on voting days.

No Cell Phones at Voting Booths

Another security measure announced recently by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) was to forbid voters to carry cell phones to the voting booths. They will have to hand over their cell phone or any other electronic device before entering the voting booth on election day. The purpose of the measure is to guarantee the secrecy of the vote. In addition, metal detectors may be used in exceptional situations, evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the electoral judge.

TSE President Alexandre de Moraes highlighted that this was among the issues discussed in the meeting with the command of the military polices on Wednesday (24/08). The Moraes also highlighted hypotheses in which the cell phone can be used illegally on election day. He cited reports that militias in past elections had demanded videos from voters to prove who they voted for. He also mentioned offering an advantage in exchange for voting and even trying to make videos showing false problems at the polls.
