On Friday (24/03) morning, subway workers from the city of São Paulo accepted the proposal made by São Paulo Metro, which ended the category strike that had started the day before. The strike paralyzed operations in 4 lines and led to an increase in traffic jams.
Demands and Final Proposal
Subway workers demanded the payment of a bonus to compensate for the non-payment of profit sharing in the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, in addition to holding a public tender for hiring more workers. Until then, Metrô had refused to make concessions on these two points.
On the morning of 24 March, the subway presented a proposal to the strikers to try to normalize the service. The offer, which was accepted, includes the payment, in April, of a salary bonus in the amount of R$ 2,000 per employee and the institution of the 2023 Profit Sharing Program, to be paid in 2024.
Mobility Problems
During the strike, crowds gathered in front of the affected stations, buses were full, and more than 800 km of traffic were recorded. The most affected region was the south zone, with 272.4 km of traffic jams; the east came in second, with 205.3 km; the west, in third, with 167 km; the north was next, with 126 km; and in last, the center area, with 71.2 km.
The most affected roads were the Pinheiros road (20.1 km), the Tietê road express lane (13 km), the Rodoanel (12 km) and the Raposo Tavares highway (7.5 km).
Lines Affected
The subway workers’ strike paralyzed lines 1-blue, 2-green, 3-red of the subway since early morning, in addition to line 15-silver of the monorail. Lines 4-yellow and 5-purple, which are operated by concessionaires, circulate normally, as do CPTM trains.
