A classified report sent by the Institutional Security Office (GSI) to Congress points out that the government was informed about the possibility of violent attacks in Brasilia on 8 January. The existence of this report was confirmed recently, on Thursday (09/02), by media sources. The alert was produced by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), subordinated to the GSI, and shared with federal agencies two days before the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers Plaza. The document has been used to boost a request for the installation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the coup acts, an idea that has not been welcomed by the government.
The Report
In the report, Abin informed that it had identified the summoning of caravans in several states of the country to travel to the capital. The text reveals that they would bring “demonstrators with access to weapons and with the clear intention of invading the National Congress”. He added that “other buildings on the Esplanada dos Ministérios could be the target of violent actions”.
Abin’s alert was sent to a system made up of 48 government bodies, including ministries such as Defense, Civil House and Justice. However, some of these claim that they did not receive information about the 8 January coup acts.
Exposing the Government
For political commentators, the revelation that the report was delivered to various government agencies exposes President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Ten days after the attacks, the Workers’ Party (PT) criticized the authorities responsible for the security and intelligence forces, including the GSI.
Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI)
The information that Abin’s report is in Congress has been used by CPI enthusiasts to implement the investigation. For media sources, the strategy of this group is to implicate government ministers in the suspicions of omission by the authorities during the attacks of 8 January. The central administration would have perceived that, therefore, the CPI has been rejected by President Lula and his team. In addition, they believe that it would stall the progress of the political agenda.
