On Wednesday (12/04), the Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) disclosed its official opinion regarding a case that request former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to become ineligible. The MPE supported the request due to signs of abuse of political power.
Meeting with Ambassadors
The case was filed by PDT after Bolsonaro organized a meeting with ambassadors at the Alvorada Palace in July 2022. During the event, he accused the electoral system and electronic voting machines of being prone to frauds and of having already being rigged, even though no evidence was presented.
In practice, if the majority of ministers of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) agree with the opinion of the MPE, Bolsonaro may be prevented from running for elections for the next eight years.
Investigation
This is the last phase of the electoral judicial investigation action in which the PDT asked for Bolsonaro’s ineligibility for having made a series of accusations against the electronic ballot boxes and the Brazilian electoral system. After the opinion signed by the Deputy Attorney General for Elections Paulo Gonet Branco Gonet, the process is ready for the vote of the TSE Inspector General Benedito Gonçalves, responsible for the case at the Court. The expectation is that the trial will start between the end of April and beginning of May.
