2023 was one of the most violent years in history and Brazil was one of the main sources of the extremely high number of conflicts and violent deaths recorded. Despite not being involved in a conflict between states, the country is affected by the diffuse presence of organized crime. The information is the result of research published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), based on data from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (Acled), and the Red Cross.

One of the Most Violent Years
According to the recently released research on armed conflicts, by IISS, there were 14% more people killed in 2023 compared to 2022: 267.7 thousand died. Violent incidents linked to clashes rose 28% compared to the previous period, reaching 137.8 thousand.
1950 and 1994
According to data from Acled, 2023 was only less violent than the years 1950 and 1994, respectively, when the Korean War began and when the Tutsi genocide occurred in Rwanda.
According to UCDP data, which records data from 1975 onwards, 2023 was a record year in terms of the number of conflicts.
Sixth in Deaths and Third in Violent Events
Brazil draws attention due to the spiral of violence associated with drug trafficking and organized crime. In 2023, the country ranked third in the world in violent events (10.6 thousand) – Battles, explosions/shooting attacks, violence against civilians – and sixth in deaths in these events (8.3 thousand).
COULD BE WORSE
The IISS measures data from May 2022 to June 2023, which leaves half a year of violence out of a closed count — including the brutal war between Israel and Hamas, which caused more than 20,000 deaths in just over ten weeks.
