On Monday (23/10), General Motors (GM) workers began a strike in response to the layoffs at the three units, announced on Saturday (21). The strike was decided at meetings held at the employee unions and at the factories in São José dos Campos, Mogi das Cruzes and São Caetano do Sul. The category demands the cancellation of the cuts and the reinstatement of all employees. Demonstrations were reported.

Demonstrations
On Thursday (26/10), employees of General Motors (GM) in São José dos Campos (SP) held a protest against the 1,200 layoffs announced at three factories in São Paulo and approved the continuation of the strike.
This is the third action against layoffs in São José. On Wednesday (25), dismissed employees hung uniforms with messages on the fences of the automaker’s unit. In the messages, they asked for their jobs back, complained about years of services provided that had been disregarded by the company and requested help from the state and federal governments.

The mobilization in Brazil occurs amid the historic strike in the USA against the three main American automakers (GM, Ford Motor and Stellantis). In a strike that lasts more than a month, workers in the automotive sector are pressing for higher wages and benefits. Automakers say the union’s demands would hurt their profits as they try to compete with non-union manufacturers such as Tesla.
