The commanders of military units surrounded by supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro that are protesting against the election of Lula would be already preparing to disperse the acts in front of barracks across the country as soon as the new president takes office, on 1 January. However, authorities fear that incidents may take place during the process.
The Protest
The protests began on 31 October, just after Lula’s victory. Supporters of President Bolsonaro set camps in front of military barracks and demanded a coup to prevent Lula from taking office.
Riots
According to media sources, the decision to remove the protesters would have been taken after the episodes of violence took place in the federal capital on Monday (12/12), when Lula’s had his victory officially recognized by the electoral authority. Brasília is where the main protest is located. A large camp was set in front of the Army Headquarters.
Only the Armed Forces
The protesters who are in front of military barracks are under the jurisdiction of the Armed Forces. Thus, security is done by the Army/Navy/Air Force Police. Even if they wanted to, the state governors could only send the Military Police to disperse the acts if there was a request from the military.
Chance of Conflicts and Bad Repercussion
If carried out by force, for political analysts, the process will not be easy and can have negative consequences. It would be bad for the Lula government to start with the military repressing political opponents. For them, the best scenario would be a dispersion to occur naturally, but the resilience of the acts does indicate that this scenario will occur.
