On Thursday (14/07), Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira said that the Armed Forces will never be “reviewers” of the elections. However, once again, he demanded that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) accept proposals presented by a military team and which, according to him, aim to increase the transparency of voting.
Senate Transparency Committee
The declarations were made by Nogueira during the Senate Transparency Committee. He was invited by the Committee to give explanations on the recommendations made by the Defense to the TSE. During the session, the Defense Minister endorsed the presentation of a technician, who raised suspicions about the security of the ballot boxes. Nogueira also praised the speech of a Federal Deputy aligned with Bolsonaro, Filipe Barros, who questioned the electronic voting system; and said that he “would not fail to receive” an activist who eventually demands the public count of votes in this year’s elections.
Armed Forces Proposal
Nogueira detailed that he presented 15 proposals, three would have been accepted, another seven were not accepted, three were partially accepted and two are under study. The Defense Minister added that there are three proposals that, if accepted, could reduce discussions:
- Carrying out the ballot box integrity test under the same voting conditions, including the use of the voter’s own biometrics in the test box
- Carrying out public security tests on new electronic voting machines
- Make inspection and auditing by inspection entities effective at all stages of the process
