CONFIRMED THE SECOND ROUND BETWEEN BOLSONARO AND LULA

On October 2nd, Sunday, general elections took place all across Brazil. The population voted to elect their President, Governors, Senators and State and Federal Representatives.

In Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL) reelected himself as the state Governor with 58.57% of the votes.

In São Paulo, Tarcísio (Republicanos) will face Fernando Haddad (PT) in the second round for the state government; Tarcísio received 42.32% of the valid votes this Sunday, and Haddad, 35.70%.

The polls for President had Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva (PT) in the first place, followed by the current President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The votes, however, were not enough to elect one of them in the first round. Therefore, a second round will take place on October 30th between both.

At 10:00 of Monday (03/10), with 99.9% of the voting booths checked, Lula had 48.43% of the valid (nearly 57.2 million), while Bolsonaro had 43.20% (nearly 51.1 million).

In the third and fourth positions wereSimone Tebet (MDB), with 4.16%, or 4.9 million votes, and Ciro Gomes (PDT), with 3.04%, or 3.6 million votes.

Absent voters represented 20.94%, or 32.8 million votes, while invalid votes were 2.82%, or 3.5 million, and blank votes were 1.59%, or 2.0 million.

The result of this 1st round indicates that political polarization must continue and that the level of political violence may increase.
