President Lula has determined that Itamaraty will once again demand visas for citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan who decide to visit the country. The visa requirement had been suspended in 2019, during the Bolsonaro government.
Reciprocity
The Lula government’s decision is based on the principle of reciprocity. In addition, a current government survey pointed out that there has not been a considerable increase in the flow of tourists since the visa requirement for these four countries fell.
Now, Itamaraty will formally inform the embassies of the respective countries. Therefore, there is still no estimate of when the measure will come into effect, in practice, at the country’s borders.
