125,2 MILLION BRAZILIANS SUFFER WITH FOOD INSECURITY

The Brazilian Research Network on Food Sovereignty and Security (PENSSAN) published a study on Wednesday (09/14) in which it disclosed that 58,7% of the Brazilian population – 125,2 million people – suffer from some type of food insecurity (concern or uncertainty that they will have food in the future) and that 15,5% suffer from severe food insecurity, that is, they suffer from hunger due to the lack of money. In absolute numbers, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have the most people with severe food insecurity: 6,8 and 2,7 million, respectively. But in relative terms, the states in the North and Northeast Regions of the country present the worst situation. The worst in this sense is Alagoas, with 36,7% of the population in serious insecurity, followed by Piauí, with 34,3%, and Amapá, with 32%. The 6,8 and 2,7 million in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro represent only 14,6% and 15,9% of the population of these states.
