A high-tech camera with facial recognition allowed authorities to solve the case of a young woman that was killed during a fight between two groups of football fans in São Paulo city on 8 July. The civil police found that a Flamengo fan was responsible for the death of Gabriela Anelli Marchiano, 23. The camera that was essential for the recognition is used in the access to the Palmeiras stadium.

Main Evidence
The main evidence against him is a video that shows him throwing a glass bottle at Palmeiras fans near the fan division. The man would have picked up the bottle on the ground and threw it.
The Fight
The fight that killed Gabriela took place at around 18h00, three hours before the start of the game, on Rua Padre Antônio Tomás, at the entrance to the visiting sector. Flamengo fans allegedly threw bottles at Palmeiras fans who were on the other side of the fence.
Investment in Cameras
In addition to private facilities, like the Palmeiras stadium, local authorities have also invested in cameras with smart features, such as facial recognition and license plate recognition.
In July, São Paulo City Hall resumed the public notice for the installation of 20,000 security cameras. They are part of the Smart Sampa program. One thousand of these cameras have facial biometrics. In 2020, São Paulo state has also implemented body cameras in the uniform of the local police.
Meanwhile, Rio de Janeiro state government published a bidding notice for acquiring 260 more cameras, equipped with facial recognition, license plate reading and alarm sensors, aimed at the work of the Military Police. These technologies are not yet part of state monitoring and are bets for improvements in public safety. Recently, Rio state has started to install cameras in the uniforms of local policemen.
Another initiative by Rio state that aims to improve monitoring capacities is a project that allowed since June 2023 to connect cameras and sensors spread across the city, in condominiums or commercial establishments, with the Emergency Service 190, of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police. Federal forces are also starting to adopt these devices for improved security. The Federal Highway Police (PRF) will install body cameras in the uniforms of its officers starting next year. For the authorities, equipment could help to clarify the circumstances of a specific operation.
